At Buty we have been making these wines for a decade. Our development of these properties and blends have resulted in growing successes each year. While our current vintages have not yet been reviewed, we share the perspective of recent press for each of them.
Columbia Rediviva, Phinny Hill Vineyard Estate Grown 2009
We were the first Washington winery to focus on the exotic blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah as a deluxe wine, and we specifically sought out Phinny Hill as the home for our Columbia Rediviva. This is our fourth estate-grown vintage from this remarkable site on the east face of Phinny Hill. Grown in the rare cobble-filled soils we love so much, our 2009 Columbia Rediviva is a snapshot of a great vineyard in an exceptional vintage. While it is reminiscent of the stellar 2007 vintage, what’s different here is the dominance of cabernet and how it shapes the wine with its darker tones and elements of beetroot and chocolate. At the same time, the syrah keeps it brighter than any cabernet. Although the spring of 2009 was cool, a hot September finish brought big ripe flavors and tannins to the vintage, complemented by generous acids from the long, cool spring.

Sémillon, Sauvignon & Muscadelle 2011
The 2011 vintage was the coolest in over 30 years. It was also a season that we believe produced the finest expression of this wine in our history. Though bright and lively like a riesling, and almost as pungent as gewürztraminer, it is absolutely distinctive. As has been the case over the past few vintages, the story of the 2011 vintage has been our love affair with muscadelle—Washington’s rarest of grapes—and its ability to bring a harmony and completeness to this blend. From its sun-bright straw yellow color to its massive column of perfumed aromas, this wine is summer in a glass. The vibrant bouquet reveals inviting layers of fresh flowers, quince, lemon, star fruit, apricot, peach and lime blossom, and in classic Buty style, it is bright on the attack, with rich flavors, a smooth, broad mid-palate and a crisp finish.

Conner Lee Vineyard Chardonnay 2011
This wine comes from two coveted blocks of Washington’s famed Conner Lee Vineyard—the old 1989 block and the 2005 clone 95 block. Even though it is 100 percent Chardonnay, we approach it much like a blend, with the old-vine block contributing the classic elements of a great Blanc de Blancs Champagne and the clone 95 fruit providing plush, ripe fruit elements. In the past, this wine has been dominated by the 1989 block, but in the very cool 2011 vintage we increased the clone 95 portion to 40 percent. The result is a wine that is smooth and silky on the palate, but with a verve and focus that accentuates the pure, high-toned fruit—all unobscured by oak. Renowned Washington wine critic Paul Gregutt called the 2010 Conner Lee Chardonnay “a big, grin-inducing wine that is virtually irresistible.” We think the 2011 may be even better.
